Economic holdings - minimum essential area for profitable agriculture
Family holding - Which gives work to one family having one plough under traditional farming system
Optimum holding - Maximum size of holding which should be owned by a family

As per Agricultural Census, five types of operational holdings in India

Land reforms

To overcome inequitable land distributi on, land reforms taken at the time of independence

Abolition of intermediaries such as Zamindars
Tenancy reforms such as regulation of rent, security of tenure, ownership right to tenants
Redistribution of land

However, these has minimal socio-economic impact and was considered as a failure

Legalise land leasing to ensure security of land ownership right for landowners and security of tenure for tenants for the agreed lease period.
Automatic resumption of ownership to the landowner
Mutual determination of terms and conditions of lease by the land owner and the tenant
Facilitating all tenants to access bank credit and insurance facilities
Incentivizing tenants to make investment in land improvement,
