Mandate

Mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding UN Charter.
United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as

peace and security, disarmament, terrorism,
climate change, sustainable development,
human rights, humanitarian and health emergencies,
gender equality
governance, uphold international law

UN Charter

The UN Charter opens with the words, “We the Peoples of the United Nations” These words put p ople at the center of the UN.

Responsibility to Protect Under Section 2 of UN Charter

Responsibility of each state to protect its population from genocide, war crimes, ethnical cleansing and crimes against each humanity

Non-intervention in domestic affairs

Article 2 (7) states that the United Nations has no authority to intervene in matters which are within the domestic jurisdiction of any State,

Article 1 (2) - Equal rights and self-determination of peoples
Article 2 (4) - Prohibition of threat or use of force in international relations

Specialized Agencies of the United Nations

Specialized agencies are autonomous organizations working with the United Nations and each other through the coordinating machinery of the United Nations Economic and Social Council
Specialized agencies may or may not have been originally created by the United Nations, but they are incorporated into the United Nations System by the United Nations Economic and Social Council
All were brought into relationship with the UN through negotiated agreements. Some existed before the First World War. Some were associated with the League of Nations. Others were created almost simultaneously with the UN. Others were created by the UN to meet emerging needs.

Regional Groups

UN member states are divided into five regional groups:

Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC),
Western European and Others Group (WEOG),
Eastern European Group
African Group
Asia-Pacific Group

The United States of America is not a member of any regional group, but attends meetings of the Western Europe and Other States Group (WEOG) as an observer and is considered to be a member of that group for electoral purposes.

IOM	International Organization for Migration works	Inter-governmental organisation To help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people. CTBT	Comprehensive Test ban Treaty	multilateral treaty that bans all nuclear explosions, for both civilian and military purposes, in all environments. Adopted by UNGA in 1996 but not entered into force as 8 states did not ratified it. US, China, Israel, Iran, Egypt signed but not ratified. India, Pakistan, North Korea did not sign.
OPCW	Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons	The is the implementing body of th Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which entered into force in 1997. OPCW Member States work together to achieve a world free of chemical weapons HQ: Hague , Inter-governmental organisation Israel signed but not ratified. Egypt, North Korea, South Sudan are not members April 2020, OPCW blamed Syria for toxic attacks
