It is aimed at incentivizing creativity and innovation.
It can include creations such a new drug composition, business module, product, software and so on.
Some of the aspects of intellectual property include patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indications and industrial designs, plant varieties
IP laws are also a means of domestic protection

Ex: US argues that Indian IP laws in pharma sector are protectionist US companies unable to profitably operate in India

In India, regulator is Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks is under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry

A patent is granted for an invention which is a new product or process that meets conditions of novelty, non-obviousness and industrial use.
Patents in India are governed by “The Patent Act 1970” which was amended in 2005 to make it compliant with TRIPS

Copyright is a right given by the law to creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works and producers of cinematograph films and sound recordings
This right allows its creator the rights of reproduction, communication to the public, adaptation and translation of the work.
Copyrights in India are governed by “The Copyright Act, 1957â
Section 57 of the Copyright Act, 1957 provides for “Author’s Special Rights,” better k as “Moral Rights"

Registration of a GI is valid for 10 years after which it needs to be renewed.
GI is a collective right. Producers can use the collective GI mark to commercially exploit the products
It only protects the name or indication. GI act does not protect knowledge or technology of production, which means that same product can be produced and marketed with other name, defeating the whole purpose of the act.

It refers to the protection granted for plant varieties.
These rights are given to the farmers and plant breeders to encourage the development of new varieties of plants.
Plant variety protection in India is governed by “The Protection of P ant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001”.

Basic information on industrial property laws, management and strategy, and technology commercialization and marketing.

CIPAM (Cell for IPR Promotion and Management) has been designated as the national focal point for the TISC network.
CIPAM is responsible to identify host institutions, access their capacities and host them in joining the TISC network

As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), India enacted the Act to comply with the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)
